The “Oasi Faunistica di Vendicari” Nature Reserve, located a few kilometers from the city of Noto, is one of the major natural attractions of southeastern Sicily.
Characterized by sand dunes along the coast, with over 350 different species of plants and 254 different species of birds that populate it mainly in autumn, winter, and spring, and in some cases even in summer, it is certainly a protected area of great charm and naturalistic interest.
It stretches for 8 km along the coast and in the central part it is possible to visit important man-made structures built to defend the coast from Saracen and Turkish attacks, but above all for fishing, processing, and canning Mediterranean bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus).
It is possible to visit the former fishermen's houses, which have now become a visitor center and eco-museum for the nature reserve, as well as the warehouses and facilities for processing, cooking, and canning bluefin tuna, the most delicious and sought-after variety due to the quality of its meat, which is less fatty and more flavorful. The Vendicari tower, built to defend the coast and the ancient loading port of the city of Noto, can still be admired today in all its beauty and dates back to the Aragonese period...
