The Monte Nero degli Zappini trail was the first nature trail to be created within the park and is still one of the most evocative and easy routes that can be taken within the protected area. The trail starts from the plateau west of Monte Vetore (1740 m above sea level) and crosses ancient and recent lava fields (1985-2001), with caves formed by lava flows, hornitos (small volcanic cones), cannon stones (solidified lava accumulated around a tree trunk), giving visitors an idea of a characteristic volcanic landscape..

Following a forest track through a fascinating forest of black pine, which is very common within the protected area, you will arrive at a picnic area where you can stop for a break.
